Alvis TA21
Back in their day, the Alvis name was very desirable as a hand made luxury & bespoke luxury sports car maker. The TA21 is no exception. In 1950 to 53 you could have expected to pay the same amount as a good sized family home if you wished to own one. In 2023/24 it would be the equivalent of £250k to £275K.......
This car had been the owners dream for quite a few years, so he took the opportunity to pounce on it when it came up for sale. However, as car known for its effortless smooth performance it seemed a little lack lustre and was in definite need of a health check and tune.
The first thing noted was that the forward SU float bowl had a tendency to over flow. Hence without a doubt needed at least a clean and a check of the needle valve and gasket. As the the health checks and tuning continued, more and more age related issues of a minor nature began to unfold.
- The float to Aux Carb feed was blocked,
- The Aux car needle was eroded,
- The Aux solenoid was intermittent,
- The needles and jets showed signs of ethanol fuel corrosion.
- The carbs were out of tune and out of balance
- The ignition timing was significantly out
- etc etc etc
Nothing serious, just a few things out of sorts compounding the effect of each other. Once resolved, it was back to being everything you'd expect of a classic Alvis. Beautiful......
