'Consultancy & Time'
Consultancy & Time?
Unlike the famous Louis Armstrong song.... 'we don't have all the time in the world'.
(Perhaps I will have more when retirement comes beckoning, but sadly it definitely doesn't fit in with my working day, or personal time just yet.)
Already busy without running a helpline
So....why do I mention time? I'm not going to go into depth about what running your own business involves, however I am the butcher, baker and candlestick maker all rolled into one. As such it doesn't then leave me with the time to be the free professional consultant resource, which some clearly require and in some ways seem to expect. The time required to answer/advise and explain the many factors involved in getting a car to run well, tends to come from my own private time, after completing an already demanding working. (.....queue the violin music). Sadly the time isn't there to give......I value my personal time just as much as you do for your own time.
When I give time for free.....it is usually to a Charity
* As you'll see I do more than most for free, but it tends to be for registered charities examples such as....
But when Joe Bloggs messages and asks me for free advice, just take a minute and ask yourself....
a) If you phoned a restaurant would the chef write to you in their free time to give free advice about what cooking equipment to buy? where to buy it from? why? and what ingredients and temperatures to use?
b) Is a kitchen fitter going to spec your kitchen during their evenings for free whilst explaining the best units or fittings and why?
c) Is a taxi driver going to plan your route for you for free during their free time. Tell you where to stop off, which fillings stations are the best to use and why?
d) Is your local garage going to explain the 'ins and outs' of how to fix your car so you can do it yourself at home?
How to make an hr... a day...a week....or even a month disappear!!
I don't want you to think that I'm being awkward and could help you individually but choose not to. It is far from the case. What I am actually saying is that whilst you may feel your question is a 'one off' from you, it's most definitely not a one off to me.
So in putting 30 mins aside to offer advice to you singularly, why wouldn't I then be expected to put 30 mins aside to answer the other 2 or 3 hundred messages I receive also requesting advice? And of course one message simply leads to another....
Can you see where my evenings and weekends just disappeared?......just replying to 'advice' related message requests.
What is a consultancy package and why is it chargeable?
If your need for advice necessitates you messaging me you are clearly wanting professional advice instead of looking on the net, forums and groups for advice (albeit good or bad advice via social media!). Part of being a professional of any skillset is that the core topic is aligned with your paid profession from which you earn your living.
Why would you not expect to be paid, to provide the professional advice or service you are being requested to provide?
To those asking the question, sure it's your hobby...your interest...your passion in life. To the professional, it is how they earn their living, how they pay their bills, and how they put food on their family table table.
It's a simple matter of mutually helping each other!
Would you benefit from a consultancy package?
When I receive questions I can immediately envisage the time required to give the answer you require. From experience I can also often envisage, where one answer leads to in terms of the next question about to be raised. Ultimately I'll then have a feel for the time involved, and I can offer an indication of the associated cost which will be required to be pre-paid before I invest my time into offering the explanation which you require.
