Datsun 240Z (6 cylinder)
Same owner for 5+ years
The Datsun 240Z car, is fitted with a 2.4L inline 6 cylinder engine, fuelled by a Japanese version of the HS6 SU Carburettor.
The owner contacted me and explained that the car had started to run a little 'out of sorts' and based on internet advice he had tweaked and lost the programmable ignition advance curve as used within the 123+ Bluetooth distributor as fitted. The curve previously written for the car was done by a Rolling Road operator. So on arrival the first task was to ensure that the TDC position used by the 123 distributor was correct (and it wasn't). I can't understand why the RR operator hadn't checked this, but clearly they hadn't. An 8 position curve was then written for the car including 'static (for start up), idle and all the way through to maximum RPM's.
The twin SU carbs were then cleaned, checked and baseline set, balanced and then dialled in by CO% gas analysis. Ina very positive way the owner remarked that the car had never sounded as nice in all their years of ownership. Just what I like to hear!!
During the health check and tuning process a number of factors were identified which would cause the issues as described by the client. These were reset individually, then checked using numerous 'old school' diagnostic equipment, and the engine responded beautifully to all the changes made. One or two very small observations/advisories given to the owner....otherwise all is well!
