Triumph Spitfire 1300 - Tuning by AG Classic Car Tuning

There are two common engine sizes for the Triumph Spitfire.....the 1300 and the 1500.   The 1300's are increasingly becoming the 'rarer' of the two these days, and this was a very usable example of the 1300, kept by this owner for many years.

Whilst exhibiting at the 'Bangers for Cash' live event at Scampston Hall 2023, the owner of this vehicle came to me for a little advice, which was duly given.   Early int 2024 he contacted me once again to say the advice worked, and the car was now running however could I call round and tune it properly for him?   Ofcourse I can.....that what I do.

First issue noted was that there was a 'magical mystery' within the ignition wiring to the ballast resistor.  When running Voltage arrived in at 14.2V, and the ballast resistor only brought it down to just over 12v.   So, because the car was converted to electronic ignition and hence 'ballast' was no longer required I converted the car over to normal 12v and an accompanying 12v sports coil...to the spec of Lucas DLB 105.

Those with a keen eye for detail may notice that the car is no longer using twin HS2 SU's (1.25") and has instead been upgraded to twin HS4's (1.5").  Hence, after setting everything correctly one of the key tasks was to get these slightly bigger carbs to 'behave' a little smaller during start up and low speeds.   But of course, give the extra power/breathing benefit of being a slightly bigger carb than the original HS2.   Mission accomplished......the owner was overjoyed at the outcome and can't wait for better weather to arrive.
